Karate (Isshin-ryu)
Karate is a traditional martial art that originated in Okinawa, Japan. Its roots can be dated as far back to the 14th century. Karate consists of the repetition of techniques to develop muscle memory along with the practice of body conditioning and partner drills. Karate not only teaches one self-defense but also promotes living a healthy and peaceful lifestyle. Karate has many different styles, branches, and organizations. The main style of karate we teach is called Isshin-Ryu karate.
Isshin-Ryu was created by Tatsuo Shimabuku. He combined his knowledge of Shorin-ryu, Goju-ryu, and Kobudo to create Isshin-ryu. What makes Isshin-ryu unique is that it breaks from the traditional twist punch and bone blocks; and uses a vertical punch and muscle blocks and promotes a more fluid natural movement in its kata. Isshin-ryu made it's way to the US mostly by armed service members who served on Okinawa in the Vietnam War era. Shimabuku's hope was to help spread Okinawa's culture throughout the world. Isshin-Ryu translates into "Whole 'Hearted Way", which promotes that in whatever endeavor we pursue, we do it the best that we can with a whole heart.
Our organization is called the Isshinkai, it is led by Arcenio Advincula. Sensei Advincula is a world renown martial artist who started studying martial arts at the age of 8. He was one of Isshin-ryu's American pioneers and started studying under the founder in 1958 during his first tour in Okinawa, while serving in the Marine Corps. Today, at the age of 86, Sensei Advinucla still trains and has the energy of someone half his age. Many of us in the Isshinkai see Sensei Advincula not only as our Sensei but as the head of Isshin-ryu today. Although mostly retired from teaching, he will still train a few of his students periodically and still makes appearances at the yearly Isshinkai Enbukai (Gathering) to watch over his student's training.
Kobudo
Kobudo is the practice of ancient weaponry of Okinawa. While Kobudo is apart of Isshin-ryu, we also study Ryukonkai Kobudo.
DDPY
DDPY is a fitness program created by former professional wrestler Diamond Dallas Page after he broke his back in the ring and with the help of Yoga, was back in the ring a couple months later. He combined Yoga Poses, Phyisical Therapy exercises, Calestinics along with the use of Dynamic resistance ( or as we say in Karate enbuki breathing) to create the DDPY program. Chad started this program to help him recover from reoccurring back issues that he sustained from his time in the Army. After regconizing what it could do - He became a certified instructor of the program in hopes to help others as it helped him.
